There is a story in the Gospel according to John about a pool called Bethesda. What made this pool special was the belief that once in a while, an angel would come down and stir its waters. When the water was in motion, whoever entered the pool would be healed from any illness. Imagine the scene: the pool surrounded by people of all kinds of sickness, waiting anxiously for the water to move. The main issue, however, was that everyone needed healing. Because they all had the same urgent need, there was no time or ability to help one another. The only ones who could truly help were those who were healthy - those who did not need to enter the water themselves. This story makes me think of the world today, filled with people needing physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. And the only place where they can find true healing is God - who knows exactly what each of us needs. Yet so many people do not know how to approach God. That's where someone who can introduce them comes in - someone who can stir the waters, helping others find their way. This is where the Church comes in: those called to stir the waters, to help others get close to God. As I mentioned before, only those who do not need to enter the pool themselves - those who are whole and healed - can truly help others. Only they can put others' needs before their own.
