Alan Waterman was born in 1949 in what was then rural Essex and spent his early childhood grubbing around in hedges ditches and ponds developing what would become a lifelong passion for the natural world in all its forms. He obtained a degree in biology from London University and then qualified as a teacher. He taught in Nigeria and Spain before returning to England to set up his own Field Study Centre which he ran for 25 years.
