Among the growing number of World Heritage site studies, this is the first edited volume to be based on the in-depth knowledge of anthropologists who did long-term ethnographic fieldwork in the specific sites. The book does not rely on the official discourses and the established professionals and spokespeople alone but considers a wide range of actors and viewpoints, including the subaltern and marginalised ones. The book pays particular attention to the political and economic contexts of the sites and the often novel institutions arising together with World Heritage designations. As most cases are taken from the Global South, in particular Africa and Asia, the chapters illustrate how a prominent global institution is adapted and transformed when it travels outside its original Western context.
