Would We? Could We? - memories of a sexual past is M. G. Richárd's first collection of gay erotic fiction. As he mentions, the term "fiction" is relative in this case, with all of the stories based in part or sometimes in full on incidents that actually transpired. Sexually graphic to fit the genre, there is nonetheless a style of restraint that pulls the sex scenes out of the socially unredeeming crass into a frank and open display of passion and love as well as sex and lust. The actual inspiration took place in the 1970s to early mid-1980s, prior to the extent of the HIV and Hepatitis B epidemics was known or realized in the Midwest. It was an era - for heterosexuals as well as homosexuals - when sex was "safe" and promiscuity was, at least in some areas of society, the norm. Today, more precaution would be advised; however, the stories themselves are timeless. The book is more than just a series of sex stories; it is almost like a nostalgic memoir - leading into a series of sex stories! It reminds us of the general tone and mood of Tales of the City, if you're familiar with that series - a sexually explicit, gay version of Tales of the City, to be sure, but nonetheless narrative and perhaps melancholy yet frequently humorous, otherwise upbeat, and then sexual. And there is always a conclusion to the story after the sex scene. If you like reading gay erotica for style and, perhaps, some substance, as well as for sexual stimulation, then you should enjoy this collection of over 20 related but self-contained stories. You may not find the stories in this book to be (how shall we put it in a general description section) useful for self-gratification, although you may "come" across one or two that fit those needs; however, most of these stories may well put you in the mood to continue such desires afterward, perhaps surprising your partner with sudden interest or just finding whatever helps to finish you off, shall we say. If you're the guy who fast-forwards gay porn videos to the anal scene, then this book probably is not for you...although you could just flip through the pages until you find the sex scenes, we suppose. If you're someone who needs the porn video to have a setup story to lead into the first sex scene and finds porn videos without them, um, "unstimulating," then this book is (hopefully) for you. It could almost stand on its own with the sex scenes removed as a gay romance novel, and the author is considering a PG or PG14 version in the "fade to black" style of old movies. The author also procrastinates a lot, so that will probably never happen. But back to this paperback and its contents, the question(s) remains: If we had it all to do over again, "Would We? Could We?" If you are younger (a relative term in gaydom, to be sure), perhaps the questions are, "Will you? Can you?" Hopefully, this collection of tales (with a few "tails") will either bring back fond memories of your own or inspire new memories to be made in the future.
