Woman, nun, and poet; an indomitable spirit in a world of foolish men. The Phoenix of America, the Tenth Muse, darling of the viceroy and antagonist of Archbishop Francisco de Aguiar; a daughter of the volcano for having been born at the foot of Popocaté petl, but registered as a "daughter of the Church" for having come into the world as an illegitimate child; a courtesan, a nun, a playwright... All of this and more was Juana Iné s de Asbaje y Ramí rez de Santillana, the greatest poet these Mesoamerican lands have produced. 1695. Death stalks her, but Sor Juana does not yield. With her pen as her sword, she writes her memoirs: from the secret games among forbidden books on her grandfather's hacienda, to the opulent moments of the viceregal court, the applause of high society, and the painful silences behind the walls of the San Jeró nimo convent. A life of genius, of passion, of verses that challenged kings, inquisitors, and centuries.
