Janelle was born and raised in a small town in northeast Georgia. Out of business college, Janelle married a young naval officer from Pennsylvania. They moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. When his Navy military duty ended, his new engineering job took them to Minnesota. They raised their three children in a Minneapolis suburb.She was a stay-at-home mom. This permitted her to be able to volunteer as secretary for several auxiliaries and her denomination's state office. She was involved in church leadership roles, singing in the choir, and recording two sacred albums. She found time to coach her daughter's elementary basketball team for one season. She trav- eled to nineteen countries on working mission trips with her church.
