Benito Pérez Galdós (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1843-Madrid, 1920) es uno de los autores más importantes del realismo y el naturalismo europeos del siglo XIX. Con veintitrés años se trasladó a Madrid para iniciar la carrera de Derecho, que nunca acabó. Allí también comenzó su carrera literaria, que compaginó con labores periodísticas y políticas. Su fama empezó a crecer con los primeros Episodios Nacionales, cuyo conjunto de cinco series ya lo había encumbrado como uno de los escritores españoles más importantes de la época. Pero su ingente producción va mucho más allá y en ella encontramos diversas obras teatrales y más de treinta novelas, entre las que se cuentan obras maestras como La desheredada (1881), Tormento (1884), Fortunata y Jacinta (1886-1887), Miau (1888), Tristana (1892) o Misericordia (1897).
