50 Situations Awaiting Every Forensic Scientist is a personal guide to navigating the unique challenges and circumstances faced by those who give a voice to scientific evidence in our criminal justice system. In this thoughtful collection of heartfelt advice, humorous reflections, and candid self-admissions, acclaimed forensic laboratory administrator and executive coach, John M. Collins, encourages readers to stand tall in the face of adversity and opportunity. There is no such thing as a typical forensic science career, but there are situations, both common and uncommon, that can disorient and demoralize even the most capable professional if he or she is not prepared. From the perspective of one of the most recognized and respected forensic science leaders, not only in the United States but also internationally, 50 Situations promises to inspire and motivate while also cautioning forensic scientists to remain alert for situations that are especially threatening or perplexing. Autorenporträt
John M. Collins is an executive coach, leadership facilitator, and forensic organizational clinician. He specializes in helping high-stakes, high-impact clients build individual effectiveness "at level," a method for supporting professionals working at the four tiers of organizational accountability: executive, managerial, professional, and pre-professional. He started his private practice in 2013 after retiring his award-winning, 20-year career in forensic science, having served as the director of forensic science for the state of Michigan and authoring two pioneering textbooks on forensic science leadership and public policy. As a facilitator, John's range of experience is unmatched, having facilitated corporate strategic planning sessions, as well as highly sensitive domestic and international meetings on behalf of the United States Government. John's career highlights include his part in the forensic investigation of the Atlanta serial bombings, which included the bombing of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta (for which he received a commendation from the Department of the Treasury), as well as his 2013 participation in a historic meeting with Attorney General Eric Holder and other experts to discuss solutions to gun crime following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. In his practice, John utilizes a unique method that combines principles of executive coaching and leadership education with forensic analytical methods that quickly and accurately identify opportunities for his clients to improve their professional effectiveness. John has a master's degree in Organizational Management and is formally certified as a senior HR professional by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). In 2012, John was trained as a professional coach by the College of Executive Coaching. In 2012, John left his position as the director of forensic science for the state of Michigan leading its seven laboratories and their 260+ employees to their first-ever international accreditation. He then transitioned into private practice where he continues to make impressive contributions both inside and outside of forensic science. He is the author of "HR Management in the Forensic Science Laboratory" (Academic Press, 2018) and "Crime Lab Report" (Academic Press, 2019), and he continues to entertain and inform audiences across the United States and overseas with stories, lessons, and perspectives gained from his illustrious careers in both forensic science and executive coaching. John studied forensic science at Michigan State University and was a four-year varsity, record-breaking discus thrower. He was awarded All-American status at the age of 46 by USA Track & Field for his performance at the 2016 national masters track & field championship meet. John has two grown children and has offices near Lansing and Detroit, Michigan.
