Autorenporträt
Helen Bertha Livingston was born on February 28, 1953, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her early years were spent in Philadelphia, where she lived until the age of 12. Tragically, Helen lost both of her biological parents at this young age. Following their passing, she was adopted by James and Daisye Wells, and together they relocated to Tallahassee, Florida. Helen, along with her four siblings, was raised in a household where faith played a central role. Regular church attendance was a cornerstone of their upbringing, and it was during this formative period that Helen's deep and enduring relationship with God began to take shape. She actively participated in church activities throughout her childhood and teenage years, fostering a spiritual foundation that guided her for the rest of her life. Upon graduating from high school, Helen pursued higher education at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) in Tallahassee. She enrolled at FAMU with the support of an Upward Bound scholarship, embarking on a path to earn a degree in Social Work. Helen's academic journey was marked by excellence; she consistently earned top grades, frequently appearing on the Dean's List. Beyond her academic achievements, Helen harbored a profound passion for the arts, with particular interests in writing and drama. She began writing poetry at an early age, using it as an outlet to express her deepest thoughts and emotions. Her talent for poetry became a defining aspect of her creative spirit. In 1972, Helen returned to Philadelphia, where she met Belton Livingston Jr. The couple welcomed their son, Belton III, in 1973, followed by their daughter, Shantelle, in 1974. Helen and Belton Jr. remained married until 1982. Following their separation, Helen embraced the role of a single mother, facing life's challenges with resilience and determination to provide for her children. Despite the struggles she encountered, Helen's unwavering faith sustained her, serving as a source of strength and hope during difficult times. In 2000, Helen was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. In 2002, she made the decision to return to Florida, where her children soon joined her. As the disease progressed, Helen found solace and comfort in her faith, which grew even stronger. Writing became an increasingly vital part of her life, and she devoted more time to composing poetry, often reflecting her spiritual journey and the profound connection she felt with God. Helen Bertha Livingston was a cherished member of her family, remembered as a compassionate and beautiful soul with a humble spirit. Her presence enriched the lives of those around her, and her legacy endures through the love she shared and the memories she created. Helen's family continues to hold her dear, celebrating her life and the indelible mark she left on their hearts.
