It is not necessary to read this book before reading the second full length book--Blood of the Neko.

As anyone who has read All In or Tears of the Neko can tell, stories delve into the emotional side of the characters and relationships are built over time. The genre of the story isn't as important to the story as the development of the characters; therefore, stories will fall into just about any genre-- modern, historical, fantasy, sci-fi, shifter, slave-fic, etc.
