After 3 years apart, Imani Marpessa, now 18 is back home in an attempt to mend her relationship with her mother Nuru Marpessa, a recovered alcoholic. Hesitant at first, Imani quickly warms up to her mother after realizing just how changed she is. Nuru's attitude appears positive, she looks healthy and happy. She reveals to her daughter that she found God thus her new found joy and especially credits a man of God that came to her at her lowest. She calls him Jon Nabi or Baba, A Reverend at the local church she attends.

Nuru convinces her daughter to start attending Jon Nabi's church. This way she can also grow closer to God too. Despite not being a believer, Imani agrees to give it a shot. First time seeing Jon Nabi, she is mesmerized by his ethereal good looks. Quickly Imani learns just how important this man of God is to her mother and how very close they are. She thinks he is a good influence on her mother.

As she slowly gets to know The Reverend, the conversation of faith arises and cracks quickly start to form due to the differences of opinion. Imani finds herself cornered with endless questions and criticism regarding her religious beliefs.

It doesn't take long before she begins to witness a sequence of peculiar activities within Jon Nabi's church that make her question whether he is running a cult or circus. She quickly picks up on the fact that Jon Nabi is not who he claims to be. She goes as far as befriending the church cleaning lady, Asha whom they share common views of the church.

It gets worse; her mother Nuru exhibits a pattern of deranged episodes and delusions especially in regards to religious topics and/or Jon Nabi. Imani soon realizes that her mother's mental well-being is in jeopardy. She starts to believe that it is in fact no longer about salvation but rather a sick infatuation Nuru has for Jon Nabi and his beliefs that he uses to manipulate his followers. She begins to not only fear her mother but fear for her while trying to seek help for her.

A journey that begins with a mother and daughter wanting to reconcile ends up in a series of unexpected, impious and devious events that threaten to ruin lives. They say God brings people together but it aren't looking that way for the mother-daughter duo. Will they make it or will they be driven further apart?
