If you live in the city and work 9 till 5, pay your mortgage good luck to you.
Personally I have lived mostly rural. I have no utilities and rely on Off Grid Solar Power and Rain Water. I do have a smartphone for the internet.
One big advantage is no bills. Another advantage is it is all DIY I do not need an electrician.
Disadvantage is running out of power but to fix that I need to add a panel and a couple of batteries.
Having alternative power and living off grid is a liberating experience.
