Beyond the decadent grandeur of the apartment building, the terraced slopes of Portofalco wound their way down to the harbor. Portofalco wasn't the most exclusive or well-known summer resort on that stretch of the Italian coast, but it was one of the most beautiful. Julia had told him that many of its wealthy visitors returned year after year.
Grace leaned on the wrought-iron balcony railing, feeling the cold metal against her arms. However, she knew that, as the sun rose a little higher, the balcony would be flooded with sunlight, and the shelter provided by the blinds in each room would be immensely appreciated.
Grace wondered what time Julia would return from Valle di Falco. Her friend lived there year-round as she worked at one of the hotels along the coast. However, she had left that weekend, and Grace didn't expect her back until the next day.
That situation didn't bother her. When she had accepted Julia's invitation, she had done so on the condition that her friend wouldn't change her plans while she was there. Julia had a very busy social life, but Grace hoped not to be involved at all.
The two friends had known each other since school and, although they didn't see each other much, they had managed to stay in touch even when Julia was went to Italy. There was a familiar relationship between them, which seemed unaffected by the passage of time. Therefore, Grace had gladly accepted the invitation, knowing that with Julia, she wouldn't be forced into anything.
All Grace wanted was to rest, even though it took pneumonia for her to realize that. She was also working two jobs and caring for her disabled mother, and it was all so exhausting that she hadn't realized she was neglecting her own health until she collapsed.
She was the only one in her family who was still single, so she'd had to leave her apartment and move to her mother's house in Brighton to care for her. Since then, life had been a constant hustle and bustle. She went to London every day to work at the museum, and most evenings she worked as a waitress at a nearby pub to earn a little extra money. But it had been too much. She caught a cold, and quickly the mild ailment became much more serious.
After a stay in the hospital, she became convinced she could no longer care for her mother alone. Eventually, her two younger sisters agreed to share the responsibility. However, both sisters had husbands and children, and Grace suspected this help would only be temporary, so she was determined to make the most of the vacation.
The alternative was to put her mother in a nursing home, but Grace didn't like that idea. She loved her mother very much, and it was no fault of hers that she had developed a form of degenerative osteoarthritis two years earlier, while Grace was earning her doctorate. At first, she had been able to care for herself, but her condition had gradually deteriorated until she was confined to a wheelchair.
