After many battles and trials, Carter saves Mars from ecological collapse by restoring its atmosphere, but he is suddenly returned to Earth before reuniting with Dejah Thoris. The novel ends with Carter longing to return to her. Blending adventure, romance, and science fiction, A Princess of Mars helped define early space opera and inspired later writers and filmmakers, including those of Star Wars and Avatar.
