The son of a wealthy landowner, Richard set out to travel the land in search of knowledge, wisdom, and experience as the sons of nobility did before returning to administer the estate of their landed and wealthy families. For Samuel, Richard's friend, who had little motivation beyond a good time, night after night, it was the same. He was to go and experience the world, gain knowledge and experience before returning home to his inheritance.

The two men set out together, after Samuel invited himself to join Richard, their first days of travel spent in luxury, grog, music, and merriment at night. It wasn't long before the two naively fell into a long-lain trap and robbed of only a few of their possessions, the rest to be taken from them slowly and surely. Without the means of their wealthy families, the two were soon relegated to the life of commoners, and an unwelcome predicament for both, from which they would truly learn of life through the experiences bestowed upon them.
