This book describes Abnormal Uterine Bleeding, Diagnosis and Treatment and Related Diseases
It is important for any female to know why abnormal uterine bleeding can occur and what to do about it!
Abnormal uterine bleeding is any heavy or unusual bleeding from the uterus.
It can happen at any time during the monthly cycle.
Abnormal uterine (womb) bleeding is a frequent symptom in women.
Abnormal uterine bleeding can happen as either an alteration in the normal menstrual period or as bleeding in between the normal menses.
Abnormal uterine bleeding is different from normal menstrual periods.
It could be bleeding that is between periods, is very heavy, or persists much longer than usual.
It involves bleeding that happens before puberty or after menopause.

Causes:
A range of things can cause abnormal uterine bleeding.
Pregnancy is a frequent cause.
Polyps or fibroids (small and large growths) in the uterus can also produce bleeding.
Infrequently, abnormal uterine bleeding is caused by:
1. A thyroid problem,
2. Infection of the cervix, or
3. Cancer of the uterus.
In most women, abnormal uterine bleeding is produced by a hormone imbalance.
When hormones are the causes, doctors call the disorder dysfunctional uterine bleeding, or DUB.
Abnormal bleeding caused by hormone imbalance is more frequent in teenagers or in women who are reaching menopause.

Symptoms:
Vaginal bleeding between periods is one symptom of abnormal uterine bleeding.
Getting extremely heavy bleeding during the period can also be regarded abnormal uterine bleeding.
The very heavy bleeding during a period and bleeding that persists longer than 7 days is called menorrhagia.
The women may bleed adequately to soak through 1 or more tampons or sanitary pads every hour.

Diagnosis:
Pelvic exams, blood tests, imaging tests, and other procedures can help the doctor diagnose the disorder.
If the patient is likely to be pregnant, the doctor may order a pregnancy test.
If the bleeding is heavy, besides other tests, the doctor may want to check the full blood count to make sure the patient does not have a low blood count from the blood loss.
This could cause:
1.Iron deficiency
2.Anemia.
An ultrasound exam of the pelvic area reveals both the uterus and the ovaries.
It may also indicate the cause of the bleeding.
The doctor may wish to do an endometrial biopsy .
It is done by putting a thin plastic tube into the uterus.
Treatment:
The treatment will depend on:
1.The cause of the bleeding,
2.The age
3.Whether the patient want to get pregnant in the future.
If the doctor determines that a hormone imbalance is causing the abnormal bleeding, the patient and the doctor may choose to wait and see if the bleeding improves on its own.
Medical Treatment
1.Combined hormonal contraceptive methods
Combined contraceptive methods contain synthetic forms of the hormones estrogen and progesterone.
They come in pills, a vaginal ring, and a patch, and can decrease the amount of bleeding in many women.
2.Progestins
Progestins are a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone that can be taken as pills or placed in the uterus as an IUD
3.Intrauterine device
One form of IUD releases hormones and this form can significantly decrease abnormal bleeding.
Surgical Treatment
1.Endometrial ablation
This procedure removes layers of the endometrium without removing the uterus and can be done as an office procedure.
Newer endometrial ablation techniques do not need general anesthesia or a hospital stay
2.Hysterectomy
The removal of the uterus is often used to treat the problems that cause abnormal bleeding, such as uterine fibroids or cancer.
More information can be obtained by reading the book.
