A family friend worked in the same surgery center I did and mentioned Ada's situation. I offered to try to help with alternative therapies. The other nurse was hesitant. She had seen me use alternative therapies on patients and heard patients say their pain and anxiety were less, but Ada was like one of her own children. What if something went wrong?
By the end of that bitter month, Ada had not awakened. My coworker spoke to Ada's family and since other choices had been tried and failed, alternative therapy was requested, but before I was allowed bedside the family wanted to know more about me. The alternative therapy methods were interesting to my co-worker and she learned the family history of my great grandfather and maternal aunt who were intriguing. When I shared the courses and the information researchers had done, the family invited me to try.
This comatose patient was the greatest challenge in my life. And all that I studied would play a huge role in this story, like building blocks, one method added to the other serendipity was at work. A nurse anesthetist trained in advanced alternative therapies walked into my life, simultaneously as a close friend introduced me to Therapeutic Touch and the Hopi Back Technique. All got employed to guide Ada out of the darkness.
The greatest lessons that came from being involved in this case are that God calls us to obey, He is in control, He hears our prayers and prayer works.
Ada's story is one every healthcare worker should take notice of and every heart should hear. Ada's journey is one of Faith, of Hope, and of Love.
