Alma is a meat cutter in a local grocery store who wants better for herself. She takes an occasional trick to pay for her courses. She is middle aged while Stacey is just out of high school. She has a different culture than Stacey. Yet they do become friends and bond. They share their meagre meals and a thousand cups of coffee. They laugh over adding water to dried up jam to make it acceptable.
Stacey crosses the street to wait at the curb of the laundromat when Alma takes a trick. She feels like she is taking part in what she considers sordid games. A man joins her at the curb, but she doesn't trust him.
They are pulled apart by their differences. Each goes her separate way, but it is too late for one of them. Disaster strikes unexpected.
