Assertive communication is defined as a way of interacting with others, expressing desires, and managing emotions in a way that facilitates effective and beneficial communication for all involved. This approach is based on the idea that each individual has intrinsic rights that must be respected, including the sender of the message.
In contrast to traditional models of communication, assertiveness is situated between the aggressive model, which excessively prioritizes one's rights at the expense of others, and the passive model, which yields too much to others to the detriment of one's rights.
Assertive communication seeks to avoid aggression and excessive submission, proposing a middle way based on reason, clear expression of feelings, and direct communication. In this approach, objectivity is valued, feelings are expressed respectfully, and a healthy balance is maintained by avoiding giving in to the emotions of the moment.
