For over 40 years, Rob Sheinkopf has collected stories of grown men who falsely claim to have played Major League Baseball. In BASEBALL IMPOSTERS, Sheinkopf explores what author W.P. Kinsella called 'The Eddie Scissons Syndrome,' inspired by a character in his novel Shoeless Joe, the story behind the movie Field of Dreams. Though the syndrome derives its name from a fictional character, its reality is disturbingly common. Drawing on real-life examples, Sheinkopf recounts these stories, altering names to protect the guilty, with a blend of humor, skepticism, and compassion for the families who often only uncover the truth when verifying facts for obituaries or personal histories. Most people are unaware of how widespread this phenomenon is. These stories will surprise, amuse, and enlighten readers, revealing that the deception often echoes familiar tales told by colleagues, teachers, neighbors, or even family members-stories that, upon closer inspection, may no longer add up. BASEBALL IMPOSTERS is both entertaining and eye-opening, offering a compelling look at a peculiar and persistent phenomenon in the world of baseball and beyond. Rob Sheinkopf is a lifelong baseball enthusiast, originally from Syracuse, New York. He is an active member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) and has presented scholarly papers on various baseball topics at prominent gatherings such as the Sport Literature Association (SLA), NINE-the history and culture of baseball-and the Cooperstown Symposium at the National Baseball Hall of Fame. After a 40-year career in higher education, Rob retired and relocated to San Francisco, where he landed his dream job as a Luxury Suites Concierge for the San Francisco Giants. During his first year on the job, he kept a detailed diary of his experiences, which he presented as a paper titled 'My Year in the Big Leagues' at the international SLA conference in Limoges, France. Rob is the author and editor of Hey Mom, Wanna Have a Catch?, an anthology of baseball stories celebrating parents who encourage or simply tolerate their children's passion for the game. This heartfelt collection is available online wherever great books are sold. A graduate of the State University of New York at Geneseo, Rob earned a master's degree in Counseling from the University of Central Florida. He and his wife, Lisa, provide a loving home for their dog, Bochy, and divide their time between Las Vegas, Nevada, and Ponte Vedra, Florida, trading intense heat for uncomfortable humidity to spend precious moments with their 5-year-old granddaughter, Molly, and her parents.
