Beginning in 1994 research on boundaryless careers has offered a new lens to understand and research contemporary careers. The subsequent stream of writing and research has given rise to a rich and critical debate about the changing nature of careers and career values. The time is ripe to evaluate the usefulness of the boundaryless career concept, to outline and assess emerging lines of related research and to discuss avenues for future research. The papers in this special issue build on but also go beyond the previously dominant debate centered on the duality between bounded and boundaryless careers and provide a range of important theoretical and empirical contributions to progress career theory and research.
