Elijah and Elisha, two prophets, strongly opposed the Canaanite religion introduced by some kings in Israel. Israel's true strength lay in its God-devoted leaders, not in powerful armies; the prophets were their real defense. At that time, they faced constant threats from the Syrians and, even more seriously, from the Assyrians, who finally conquered and exiled the northern kingdom. Thus, only Judah remained, which persisted for a few more years until it was also conquered by the Babylonians.
