Bronze Thresholds is a narrative balancing act, a side house, an improvised structure built onto the mansion of the Homeric world. There, within its four walls, we watch a private screening of the Trojan War and Odysseus's return-told differently. The kings are stripped of their heroic ideal; slaves, men and women alike, have voices and eyes of their own, interpreting and reconstructing the world of power and divine lineage. The novel offers the beginning of yet another myth alongside the dominant one. It recounts what might have happened if a character invented by the author had slipped into the Achaean camp and, through a gradual exertion of influence, altered the fate of the war and the course of the journey back to Ithaca. Bronze Thresholds speaks of the proximity of cultures, of the chasm between the outcasts and worldly or divine authority, of the relationship between slave and master when its joints come undone. It is a fantastical narrative of billowing sails and open horizons, of the healing presence of women in a world flooded with blood and bronze. It is a denunciation of the brutality of war, a commentary on the tragic coordinates of human destiny, and at times even a farcical novel, for powers-often unfortified-draw in shavings of parody and satire.
