Gene Upchurch is a native of Durham, North Carolina and a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was an award-winning sportswriter before embarking on a 28-year career in public affairs, community relations and legislative advocacy in the utility industry. He is a proud recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the State of North Carolina's highest civilian honor. He lives in Pinehurst with his wife Lisa.
