Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful hand and arm condition caused by a pinched median nerve in the wrist. It starts with an aching in the wrist that extend to the hand and forearm. Chronic carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to atrophy of the hand muscles, particularly those near the base of the thumb in the palm of the hand. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway located on the palm side of the wrist. This tunnel protects the main nerve (median nerve) to the hand and tendons that bend the fingers. Compression of this nerve produces numbness and tingling to the palm side of the hand in the distribution of the median nerve (the thumb, index, middle, and part of the fourth fingers), burning, shooting and cramping pain radiating from the wrist, weakness of the hands and a tendency to drop objects. Without treatment nerve and muscle damage can occur.
