In the harsh economic climate of 1932 Texarcana, Arthur Speck, a farmer facing hardship, seeks an opportunity with a traveling circus, only to be violently abducted and brutalized. Imprisoned in a cage and forced to participate in cruel displays across the Midwest, Arthur endures constant torture and public humiliation. He encounters Shane, another victim of the circus's predatory practices, and together they forge a desperate plan for escape. Their attempt, fueled by desperation, tragically leads to the deaths of two circus performers. Upon successfully escaping, Arthur and Shane embark on a perilous journey hitchhiking back to Texarcana from Detroit, Michigan. However, Shane's severe injuries prove fatal, and he dies on the road. Arthur eventually reaches home, a shadow of his former self, and struggles to convince his wife, Joanna, of his survival and the horrors he endured. His plea to local authorities for justice is met with helplessness, as the transient nature of the circus makes apprehension impossible.
