Music has an intelligible nature; there is no doubt about this. It is the result of the relationship between sounds and the intellect. Sound is not music. What is musical is the meaning that the intellect acquires in the perception of a sonic event. This is not a discussion about the beauty or ugliness of a sound; more generally, I affirm a quality of music expressed in the faculty of the intellect to establish meaningful relations. On Music is a theory of musical intelligibility in which I hypothesize that the processes of musical thought are activated through a path different from rational procedures directly connected to a structured mode of discourse. The processes of musical thought are forms of non-sequential thinking whose mode of understanding is based on a capacity autonomous from formal logical rules.
