Bill Cushing's moving memoir takes us on a journey where the destination is cruelly changed after his wife's breast cancer diagnosis. The colourful descriptions of life in Puerto Rico, contrasts starkly with the realities and difficulties of escalating medical treatments and hospital stays. Rich with fond memories, and interspersed with humour, this story is much more than sad tale of a loved one lost to cancer.

Counting Down the Breaths by Bill Cushing, is one of the most beautiful, honest, and poignant love stories I've read. In their 40s when they met, this is not a love-at-first-sight story, but close. This is a story of real people who loved each other, and how they lived a beautiful marriage, until it ended, and how Bill worked through his grief, and found the light at the end of the tunnel. I recommend Counting Down the Breaths to anyone who is facing the death of a loved one, or who is grieving that death. This is a book of healing.
