Where is home? After flirting with the Canadian North for a decade, Hélèna Katz traded the familiarity of downtown Montreal for an alpaca farm in the Northwest Territories. New experiences captivated her: travelling an ice road, scraping a moosehide alongside a group of Dene women, and eating reindeer meat. Then the day-to-day reality of bears dropping by for lunch set in, along with some shopping that requires a 10-hour drive, and her dogs receiving better healthcare than she does. As did the heartache of watching friends come and leave.
Dispatches from Canada's North explores the confusion and insights of culture shock, the gifts of radical choices, and the profound beauty of this overlooked region while raising the question: Where is home?
