J. E. Staab was born in Superior, WI, and grew up in St. Louis, MO. She lived for over 30 years in northeast Ohio, a little over an hour from Pittsburgh, and her books are centered on the vibrant city of Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. She gets character inspiration from not only locals, but also from her extensive travel. Her love of that area of the country, with all of its beauty, personality, and unique culture, shines through her work. She currently resides in Sarasota, Florida.
