If I could go back in time, this is what I would tell myself:
Exercise as much as you possibly can. Even when you feel terrible, even when your back hurts, even when youhave ANOTHER migraine coming on, no matter what, if you can get sweaty, if you can go for a swim, do it. Because as much as you are afraid of making yourself worse, as afraid as you are of pain, or even the nausea and dizziness and all the other things that come with migraine, these things will only get worse if you don't exercise with some real intensity.
I know it seems like what I am saying is impossible, but you know

If I could go back in time, this is what I would tell myself:

Exercise as much as you possibly can. Even when you feel terrible, even when your back hurts, even when youhave ANOTHER migraine coming on, no matter what, if you can get sweaty, if you can go for a swim, do it. Because as much as you are afraid of making yourself worse, as afraid as you are of pain, or even the nausea and dizziness and all the other things that come with migraine, these things will only get worse if you don't exercise with some real intensity.

I know it seems like what I am saying is impossible, but you know from working with all the brilliant people you've worked with over the years - the ones with MS, Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's, the ones who've had strokes and are paralysed or are in wheelchairs, the ones who may have only days left in this world, you know that if they can do it, so can you.

You might not be able to do it every day, you may not be able to do it all and, my goodness, it's going to be hard and it's going to hurt. But it will give you back the very thing you crave - your health. It won't be perfect healthand you'll still be battling every day, but honey, you know I love you and wouldn't say this if it wasn't true, once you really get going, it will NEVER be as bad as it has been before you started.

I can tell you some of why it works, for you and others with insulin resistance, others with chronic illness and inflammation, and others with mental health problems and all kinds of other stuff going on, but no one can tell youeverything, because it's all still a mystery.

Yes, you can help yourself by eating healthy, taking care of that gut microbiome - you need to understand that too (and urgently!) but exercise is going to free you, my dear, it's going to give you back your life and your joy. It is a miracle, and so are you.

"...a voice of encouragement for those who believe success is impossible." Susan Jeffers, Ph.D. author of Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway

Autorenporträt
Since 2010, I've been the Explorer-in-Chief of Pearl Escapes, the organisation I set up to share all the most wonderful things (escapes) I could find around the world. I've shared Zumba, traditional healing, spiritual practices, my own deeply personal story of being a kidney donor and my adventures around the world.

After studying in person with don Miguel Ruiz and his sons in 2016, I was fortunate enough to be able to complete an online apprenticeship with them during the pandemic.

I've studied with Beto Perez, the founder of Zumba® Fitness and the top Zumba Instructors in the world. My biggest achievement was rolling out Zumba Gold. When I began, there were no classes in my area of London, let alone chair classes by the time I left there were 22 taught by other instructors.

I studied Maths at university because I loved the black and white of it, but then it started to become more complicated, less absolute and I couldn't handle those shades of grey, the spaces in the knowing. I got my degree but then walked away, falling in love with film, eventually getting a Masters degree and making a dance movie. Through Buddhism I learned to love the spaces in between, the mystery of life and this last practical experiment, this recent journey has shown me, magically that so many things come back around to the beginning, whether it's Maths (which is also problem solving) or the title of my feature film, because I've learned so powerfully, from the last few years, that we have "Everything To Dance For".
