Before you is an illustrated edition of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's tragedy "Faust" in Afanasy Fet's classic translation. This translation, on which the poet worked for over twenty years, combines precision and poetry, capturing the rhythm and depth of the original-from Gretchen's lyrical songs to the cosmic visions of the Prologue in the heavens, from the crude humor of the student scenes to the sublime mysticism of the finale. Fet sought not simply to convey the meaning of Goethe's lines but to recreate the music of German verse, its philosophical richness and inner melody. Goethe transformed the story of a scholar who made a pact with the devil into a philosophical drama about man's desire for the unattainable, the limits of knowledge, and the price of progress. Mephistopheles is not only a tempter but also the embodiment of skepticism, whose actions paradoxically lead to good. The love of Faust and Margarita became one of the pinnacles of world literature. The publication is accompanied by lithographs by Eugène Delacroix from 1827, distinguished by their powerful dramaturgy and expressive composition. The appendix includes old engravings from the 15th to 17th centuries by Martin Schongauer, Matthias Gerung, Sebald Beham, Jan Saenredam, and other masters, reflecting the visual culture of the Late Middle Ages and the Reformation.
