This volume takes a look at Reinhold and Georg Forster, Alexander von Humboldt and Adelbert von Chamisso both as fellow countrymen and as "foreigners", together with their experiences as travelling writers and naturalists. Drawing upon the legacies of their travels, it reconstructs the practices of writing, gathering and transferring with regards to their role in the genesis of modern knowledge systems. The individual articles within this volume examine the protagonists' horizons, conveyed through their diaries, sketchbooks and letter exchanges, the natural produce and artefacts they collected, as well as their observations of the animal and plant world, landscapes and people. They deal with work-and-effect relationships and interrelationships, including those with other researchers and expeditions.
