Gewaagde sirkusplakkate het vuurvreters, swaard-slukers, 'n wolfman, 'n bebaarde vrou, 'n skilpadseun en meer uitgebeeld. Watter vreemde wesens het hom binne die gestreepte groot top ingewag?

Die seun het onthou hoe sy skoolmaats met hom gespot het en hom 'n "freak" genoem het. Maar hier, kon die freaks openlik loop, sonder skaamte? Die idee het hom met ontsag vervul.

'n Growwe stem het sy mymeringe onderbreek - dit was tyd vir die vertoning om te begin. Die seun stap haastig binne en hou sy kaartjiestompie soos 'n goue kaartjie vas. Die tentflappe het fluisterend agter hom toe gevee, en die ligte verdof...

Terwyl voorgevoelende orrelnote deur die swaar lug gesluip het, het die ringmeester in die kollig ingestap, sy sweep geknak en uitgeroep: "Dames en here, welkom by die grootste vertoning op aarde!"
