Beyond the edge of the world, whether buried in the desert or found in dreams, lie cities that were not built for human eyes. For H. P. Lovecraft, the city was often a grave--a vast, cyclopean monument to cosmic error, alien civilization, and the terrifying truth of Earth's history.
This collection gathers the short stories that use these strange, nightmarish metropolises as the backdrop for existential horror and transcendental dread.
These tales invite you to explore places that defy geography, logic, and sanity, where a single non-Euclidean angle can shatter the human mind.
Contained within are journeys to the most essential, unsettling locales in the Lovecraftian universe:
The Nameless City: An arid journey into the Arabian Desert leads to the discovery of a pre-human metropolis whose architecture and origins scream of absolute, ancient horror.
The Dreams in the Witch House: A mathematics student takes a room in a cursed, decaying Arkham house, only to discover that the structure itself is an active nexus point used by witches and interdimensional entities to travel to terrifying, impossible cities.
The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath: A grand, epic voyage through the bizarre and stunning landscape of the Dreamlands, where the protagonist seeks a lost, fabled city across dangerous, mythic terrains.
Through the Gates of the Silver Key: A continuation of the adventures of Randolph Carter, who must navigate impossible, far-future cities built by beings of pure energy to explore the ultimate nature of time and space.
Lovecraft's cities are not merely settings; they are active participants in the horror. This classic collection is being republished now in a new edition complete with a dedication by George Henry Weiss, offering a gateway into the author's most imaginative and hellish geography.
Beware the architecture of madness.
