I have never forgotten my first encounter with a Huntsman spider. I was attending a church service in an unscreened hall one evening. Just as we were invited to join in the opening prayer, I spotted a spider the size of a small dinner plate on the ceiling above the bowed head of a blissfully oblivious saint. I decided against closing my eyes, and was very relieved when after the prayer the massive intruder caught the eye of a man in the congregation. I could not believe what happened next. The man rose and calmly swooped up the hairy heretic into his cupped hands and gently carried him to the door, releasing him into the secular world. No one seemed at all perturbed, as if it was nothing out of the ordinary. No screaming, no broom, no bug spray involved. Over the years I have had many other adventures involving huntsmen spiders, but despite them all I still call Australia "home"--- a happily retired grandmother, living in Queensland.
