The Human (Singing) Brain - A Collection of African Oral Wisdom on the Cortical Zones introduces the "Dance of Science and Storytelling", an innovative fusion of African oral traditions and modern neuroscience, designed as a primer for teaching and learning science in African languages. It translates the complex functions of the cortical zones into the poetic, proverbial, and riddling traditions of African societies. Here, the sciences of the mind and body are returned to the people, not in sterile formulas but in the vibrant language of the griots, storytellers, and wisdom keepers.

By reconstructing the scientific discourse of the brain through oral literary forms, this book aims to:

  • Demystify the science of the brain using poetry, riddles, maxims, and folktales.
  • Reclaim traditional knowledge of mental and sensory functions.
  • Revive African linguistic creativity in scientific discourse.
  • Reconnect oral traditions with contemporary scientific learning.

This book reclaims scientific discourse for African communities, proving that knowledge of the brain already exists within oral traditions. It argues that by reintegrating poetry, proverbs, and stories into science education, we make learning more inclusive, accessible, and culturally meaningful.

As the elders say, "A story untold is wisdom buried." This book unearths forgotten wisdom, bringing neuroscience back to the people in their own words.

Autorenporträt
The Weaver of Words, Wisdom, and Wonder

Dr. Cornelius Wambi Gulere is a literary craftsman whose work spans the rich terrains of poetry, storytelling, riddles, and academic scholarship. A poet by heart, a storyteller by tradition, and a scholar by discipline, his writings pulse with the rhythm of African oral heritage, the depth of theological inquiry, and the urgency of contemporary discourse. Whether capturing the whispers of ancestral voices in riddles, sculpting narratives that bridge past and future, or illuminating linguistic treasures in academic tomes, he is a literary force whose ink never dries.

Born in Nsinze, Uganda, and nurtured by the echoes of Orthodox chants and the cadence of Lusoga folklore, Dr. Gulere's literary journey has been a dynamic fusion of faith, culture, and scholarship. His Ph.D. research at Makerere University explored Riddles and Riddling in Lusoga Language and Culture, unearthing the aesthetic, philosophical, and didactic riddle performance theory showing power of oral traditions. This passion has fueled his work in education, translation, and creative writing, bringing indigenous storytelling to new generations.

An accomplished author and editor, his works appear in various literary anthologies, online platforms, and academic journals. He has been instrumental in the African Storybook Project, curating and translating children's literature into Lusoga and over 60 other languages. His seminal work, the Eibwanio Fountain LusogaEnglish Dictionary, remains a cornerstone of language preservation; A Very Mall Man, his classic children's story has been read worldwide in over 100 languages.

Beyond the page, Dr. Gulere is a priest, educator, and community advocate, blending theological depth with literary brilliance. Whether leading worship at St. Sophia Orthodox Parish or pioneering linguistic preservation efforts, he remains committed to the transformative power of wordswritten, spoken, and lived.

In print or online, in riddles or reflections, in the classroom or the pulpit, Cornelius Wambi Gulere writes not just for today, but for generations yet to come.

Explore his works, unravel his riddles, and step into the story.
