A lovely Filipino is found dead running in the city park. The body of a Russian beauty is discovered lifeless in a run-down rat trap of a motel. The corpse of a gorgeous Eastern European turns up in a park forty miles away. All strangled. All mail order brides. All connected. Somehow. Retired homicide detective Arn Anderson agrees to help his friend, reporter Ana Maria Villarreal, uncover the murderer of the women. Their investigation takes them into the seedier side of town: the rail yards of the Union Pacific; a shady international mail order bride business in Denver; motels Arn and Ana Maria would never be caught dead in.

The suspects are many. An Iraq-War vet with serious PTSD knew and was suspected of being intimate with one of the victims. When Arn finds the veteran and confronts him, the Marine's violent anger erupts, injuring Arn and making his escape.

A local businessman known to bring women into the country illegally on the pretense of marriage. After Arn confirmed with a shady international mail order bride firm that the businessman brought women into the country illegally, he shows up on Arn's suspect's radar. The man's wife hires Arn to spy on her husband and his illicit affair with a Russian mail order bride, but the hunted becomes the hunter and attacks Arn in his car, stealing Arn's camera and the incriminating evidence it holds.

The killer of a wealthy business couple in Denver years before surfaces. He and his brother killed a local restaurateur's parents in a botched home invasion, but the killer's brother took his own life before being caught. Now, the man apparently has a grudge against the restaurant owner, whom he blames for his brother's death, and intends to seek revenge.

Arn and Ana Maria's investigations clash with a police detective, who threatens to arrest the pair on several occasions for impeding the detective's own investigation. But they have bigger things to worry about. They better watch their backsthe killer knows they are getting close to uncovering him. Or her. And this killer will do what the killer has always donewhatever it takes to stay free to kill again.

Which means Arn and Ana Maria might be the next victims...

Autorenporträt
C. M. Wendelboe entered the law enforcement profession when he was discharged from the Marines as the Vietnam war was winding down. In the 1970s, his career included assisting federal and tribal law enforcement agencies embroiled in conflicts with American Indian Movement activists in South Dakota. He moved to Gillette, Wyoming, and found his niche, where he remained a sheriff's deputy for more than twenty-five years. During his thirty-eight-year career in law enforcement he had served successful stints as police chief, policy adviser, and other supervisory roles for several agencies. Yet he always has felt most proud of "working the street." He was a patrol supervisor when he retired to pursue his true vocation as a fiction writer. Wendelboe is a prolific author of murder mysteries with a Western flair, as well as traditional Westerns. He writes the Spirit Road Mysteries, the Bitter Wind Mystery series, as well as the Nelson Lane Frontier Mysteries, and the Tucker Ashley Western Adventure series.
