Il nostro padrone è un romanzo scritto da Grazia Deledda nel 1910. In questo romanzo troviamo i temi ricorrenti della scrittrice sarda: l'amore e la natura, ovviamente, e poi il Fato, il destino, che si presenta a uomini e donne come un Dio imperscrutabile e distante. La storia inizia con il ritorno a casa di Pietro Maria Dejana, vecchio possidente terriero che ha scontato lunghi anni di carcere durante i quali ha perso tutti i suoi averi. E' ferito a un piede. Nelle prime pagine dle romanzo lo seguiamo mentre si dirige zoppicando verso la dimora dell'amico fraterno Antonio Maria Moro… La figura di Pietro Maria Dejana ha il sapore di quelle degli eroi delle antiche tragedie greche. Quando era giovane voleva prendere i voti ma aveva un carattere acceso, passionale. In un accesso d'ira ha ucciso il patrigno Lurisincu, uomo vile e brutale. Ora però è passato tanto tempo. Il carcere ha cambiato il suo carattere. La sua fede è diventata dura come la pietra. E' convinto di dover espiare la sua colpa. Per questo decide di sposare Marièlene, una serva che un tempo era stata sua amante.

Autorenporträt

Deledda was born in Nuoro, Sardinia, into a middle-class family, to Giovanni Antonio Deledda and Francesca Cambosu, as the fourth of seven siblings. She attended elementary school (the minimum required at the time) and was then educated by a private tutor (a guest of one of her relatives) and moved on to study literature on her own. It was during this time that she started displaying an interest in writing short novels, mostly inspired by the life of Sardinian peasants and their struggles. Her teacher encouraged her to submit her writing to a newspaper and, at age 13, her first story was published in a local journal. Some of Deledda's early works were published in the fashion magazine L'ultima moda between 1888 and 1889. In 1890 Trevisani published Nell'azzurro (Into the Blue), her first collection of short stories. Deledda's main focus was the representation of poverty and the struggles associated with it through a combination of imaginary and autobiographical elements. Her family wasn't particularly supportive of her desire to write.
