Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) was an outstanding Polish writer and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1905). Having started his career in journalism, he worked as a correspondent in the United States (1876-1878), and turned to fiction in the 1880s. His historical novels "With Fire and Sword," "The Deluge," "Pan Wolodyjowski," and "The Teutonic Knights," which tell of key events in the history of Poland, brought him worldwide fame. In 1896, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, and in 1914, he became an Honorary Academician. This volume presents his adventure novel "In the Wilds of Africa," written under the impression of the author's travels across the African continent. The main characters, Stas and Nel, are the children of European engineers living in Port Said, where their fathers are in charge of the construction of the Suez Canal. To add variety to their childhood, their parents organize a trip to Egypt for them, but when they set off on this harmless excursion, they have no idea what deadly dangers await their children. An unexpected kidnapping, a struggle for survival in the wild, encounters with predators and tribes, trials that require fortitude and courage - this novel has become a classic of adventure literature, in which courage, friendship and self-confidence help the heroes overcome the most severe trials.
