This book is the story of one Italian family from central Illinois, but in many ways it is the story of America. My family immigrated from Italy at the beginning of the twentieth century. This series of personal stories and anecdotes were handed down from generation to generation. As the family has slowly merged into American culture, the stories have slowly disappeared... except for those heard and remembered by me, the designated Keeper of Stories and Secrets.

As the Keeper of Stories and Secrets, I tell of Grandma Pekin and her disastrous stay at Ellis Island. I tell what Grandpa Ollie remembered of Grandpa Massa from the tumultuous days of the mine wars in southern Illinois. I tell the stories of my mother and father who had to defy family... and the church... to get married at the beginning of World War Two.

I am lifting up people through the family stories which were handed down to me. In those stories Zia Argenita, Uncle Clyde, Aunt Armeda and many others come alive if but for a moment. There are stories that were only whispered about "Back in the day" when Zio (Uncle) Nello was a business partner to Mister Alphonso Capone. There are stories that are laughed about, stories that are cried about, and stories that bring sighs of pleasant remembrance. These stories about people tell the story of my family and in so doing, of many families. This is the story of immigrants from wherever becoming citizens of this land.
