In the black stallion herd, a mixed-race brown colt is born, but his deceased father, who came from a white stallion herd that lived in the desert and who, under mysterious circumstances, had to wander away from his herd, wasn't there at his birth. Because the brown colt's deceased father befriended his mother, named Neama, a black horse, and because they formed a marital bond, all this angered the black stallion herd's leader, Bolt, and that is why he killed the young colt's father in a duel. Bolt then marries the pregnant Neama, but when the colt is born, he discovers that it is not his colt. Neama begs for the life of her brown colt and swears that she will send him away when he is old enough to seek out his father's white stallion herd in the desert. Keldron, the brown horse, had a difficult childhood, plagued by racism and his stepfather's abuse. Drug abuse seems to be a way for him to cope with his pain; however, he meets an owl, a lion, and a vulture, and they embark on many adventures along the Mutsarvy River, solving many mysteries along the way. They deal with social and family issues, as well as a quest to find the white stallion herd in the desert. Keldron's happiness does not materialize after discovering the white stallion herd, as he must deal with the implications his late father fled from.
