Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was a German Romantic composer and pianist. He wrote important piano works, songs, and symphonies. His wife Clara, an outstanding pianist, inspired many of his works. Schumann suffered from mental illness and spent his final years in a mental hospital. His music, including Dichterliebe and the Rhenish Symphony, remains a milestone in Romantic music.
