The global health crisis of prescription drug misuse is particularly acute in disadvantaged regions, where addiction to such substances is fuelled by socio-economic and cultural conditions. This book delves into the rising recreational use of codeine-based cough syrup 'Bronco' among young women living in the sunshine city of Harare, Zimbabwe, offering a nuanced perspective through an African feminist lens. Based on in-depth interviews with twelve young women, the author explores the factors driving Bronco use, its impact on their lives, and the societal pressures they face. The book amplifies the voices and lived experiences of these young women, whose stories are crucial to understanding the complexities of Bronco use. It touches on perceptions of Bronco as a 'giver'; of pleasure and escapism, of confidence to survive or the provider of 'socie' in an environment where there is little else for young people. Importantly, the book underlines the role of structural inequalities and male dominance in perpetuating Bronco use, offering invaluable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers.
