Artificial Intelligence is now the focus of massive technological efforts around the world and an AI race seems to be on between the major powers. Machines are currently able to recognise patterns (voices, faces, words) but so far have been unable to "think" and reason. The rapid increase in computing power will change that. The question then is, how will people live and interact with man made sentient beings? That is a big enough question, but suppose in a parallel development, people accept mind and body implants greatly to enhance cognitive and physical abilities? What are the implications for individuals, society and the planet?

While this mad technological rush gathers pace only a few people are stopping to really think through the consequences which has never happened in the past when new technology arises, but for AI it is very necessary. To understand why, this essay explores some of the current thinking from the point of view of science fiction the best of which takes technology to its logical conclusions and allow us to view many sided versions of the future.

Autorenporträt

Lavirrealista is the pen name of Maria Pellegrini who in 2010 started her new activity as an Indie Publisher exploring the theme of technology and society in the future. She herself defined "Virrealism" as the basic theme of her work. She has now published in English and Italian a collection of short stories, "Tales from the Mother Galaxy", a short novel, "Real Virtualities" and a second novel, "Change of State First Phase" which includes the long story "Accidental Warrior" prequel to the novel. She has also published essays explaining the rationale behind her books. Trained as a geologist and environmental scientist, she specialised in mapping technology and worked for many years in the industry, later becoming editor in chief of a technical magazine. She continues to work in the IT sector and in other creative fields.

Lavirrealista è lo pseudonimo di Maria Pellegrini che nel 2010 ha iniziato la sua nuova attività come Indie Publisher. I suoi lavori esplorano il tema della tecnologia e della società nel futuro. Lei stessa ha definito il "Virrealismo" come il tema di base dei suoi lavori. Il concetto basilare del Virrealismo è la realtà virtuale del futuro.
Ha pubblicato in inglese e in italiano una raccolta di racconti, "Tales from the Mother Galaxy", un romanzo breve, "Real Virtualities" e un secondo romanzo, "Change of State First Phase" che include il racconto "Accidental Warrior" prequel del romanzo. Ha anche pubblicato saggi che spiegano la logica alla base dei suoi libri. Laureata in scienze geologiche ha ottenuto un master in scienze ambientali e in seguito ha preso altre specializzazioni tecniche. Ha lavorato per molti anni nel settore, per poi diventare redattrice di una rivista tecnica. Continua a lavorare nel settore informatico e creativo.
