Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) wrote the words to The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Born in New York City, she was an abolitionist, social activist, pacifist, suffragette, and poet. She founded Mother's Day with an 1870 proclamation. Her works include Passion-Flowers, Words for the Hour, and At Sunset.
