After a few minutes of furtive searching, Amelia Enderling was about to give up. She stopped in front of an open door to look out at the bay, and that's when she finally saw him. He was standing next to the stone wall that bordered the terrace of the Bayview Country Club, facing the sea.
It was the perfect opportunity; he was alone. It was time to stand up to him, break the news, and then disappear from Seaport, Oregon, forever. In that case, why didn't he seem able to move?

After a few minutes of furtive searching, Amelia Enderling was about to give up. She stopped in front of an open door to look out at the bay, and that's when she finally saw him. He was standing next to the stone wall that bordered the terrace of the Bayview Country Club, facing the sea.

It was the perfect opportunity; he was alone. It was time to stand up to him, break the news, and then disappear from Seaport, Oregon, forever. In that case, why didn't he seem able to move?

I hadn't seen him in four months. Four months, two weeks, and three days. He was still incredibly handsome, slim yet broad-shouldered and muscular beneath the tuxedo he'd worn as the best man at his older brother's wedding. His hair was jet black, gently wavy and swept back. His eyelashes were long, and his eyes were deep, dark pools; his nose and chin were perfectly shaped and absolutely manly. Standing as he was, thoughtful and still, he looked like an aristocrat.

He was a lawyer.
Amelia looked down at her blue dress and suddenly regretted not bringing a jacket to cover herself, despite the heat of that July day. Too late, she was already moving toward him. She felt his gaze before raising her face and meeting his gaze. She held her breath. She knew she was physically attracted to him; but she had assumed that, after what he had done to her, after what she knew of the man, the effect would be minimal. Ha!

It was as if a million invisible wires came to life. In that gaze, he felt her skin again, tasted her lips, and tasted her desire.

Amelia told herself he was a mannequin, not a man. That he was selfish, and if she let him, he'd hurt her again without even realizing it.
He smiled at her as if it were the first time they'd ever met, as if the past didn't exist. No matter how badly he'd behaved toward her, that smile was practically impossible to resist.
Amelia took a deep breath... and held it. He looked surprised. Well, in a few moments his surprise would turn to fear. Amelia

continued advancing towards him.

"Hello," he said in a deep voice that made her tremble again.

"I need to talk to you," Amelia said.
Despite her abruptness, his handsome lips continued to smile. Leaning against the stone wall, his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes full of life, he said:

-Yes of course.
Amelia stared at the white rose he wore pinned to the lapel of his jacket.
"What I'm going to say is quite difficult for me," she said.
He frowned, as if he didn't understand.
"Do you remember last March?" Amelia murmured.
Last March? Hmm. I don't know, let me think...
The sparkle in his eyes told Amelia everything she needed to know. He was making fun of her.
Please listen to me. Let me tell you what I came to tell you.

He nodded.
-Forward.
I... I'm pregnant.
Finally! He'd finally said it. Amelia dared to look at his face, expecting to see anger behind his words; but that wasn't what she saw.
-Congratulations.
-That!
He shook his head slightly.
I said congratulations. Isn't that what they usually say? You're...

radiant.
"Congratulations?" she repeated in disbelief.
-Yeah.
Aren't you... angry?
Maybe disappointed, but not angry. Why would I be?

Should I be?
"Well... no. I mean... I thought you might dislike it. You told me you didn't want children." An immense relief washed over her, and she didn't notice the puzzlement in that look. "I thought you were going to think I got pregnant on purpose. But I assure you, it wasn't like that, it was a slip. But now that it's happened, now that I've finally come to terms with the fact that I'm going to have a child and that I can feel it in my belly... well,

I'm delighted to be pregnant. I'm...
