The author lived as a child in fascist Germany; then lived as a teenager and young adult under communism in Red Army-occupied- Germany. Subsequently he lived and worked mainly in then-West Germany, Canada, United States, Mexico. He had to become a man at age fifteen. He was a laborer in early life and graduated from law school in his sixties.
