Nightshade: Erid and the Shadow world follows the story of a fourteen year old girl, Erid, who is living on the streets of a city in the north of England in 1897. Erid, though a loyal friend, is not very nice, she kicks fast, bites hard, is scruffy, always hungry, dirty and probably rather smelly. Hers is not a story of rags to riches, nor of an ugly duckling becoming a beautiful swan.

She does not marry a handsome prince. She is a survivor and to do so links her fortunes with a group who keep watch on the streets at night-time. Frighteningly, with them She learns of creatures known as Loose Spirits, hungry ghouls, that feed off human energy. When they get her scent she is in grave peril, but she survives with the advice of her protectors.

That is until she commits a terrible act and is cast out; once more alone, she must fend for herself. Pursued by agents of an enemy she did not know existed, she flees the country, knowing that she must fight for her life, kill, or be killed. She returns with the aim of revealing a traitor and exacting a revenge that will test her daring and stamina to its very edge.
