Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810-1865) was an English novelist, biographer, and short story writer known for her vivid portrayals of Victorian society and her compassionate exploration of social issues. Born in Chelsea, London, she was raised in Knutsford, Cheshire, after her mother's death. This small-town upbringing later inspired the setting for her novel "Cranford." In 1832, she married William Gaskell, a Unitarian minister, and settled in Manchester-a rapidly industrializing city that deeply influenced her writing. Gaskell's works often addressed the struggles of the working class, gender inequality, and moral responsibility. Her first novel, "Mary Barton" (1848), brought her immediate acclaim for its realistic depiction of industrial life. She went on to write "North and South" (1855), "Wives and Daughters" (1866), and "Sylvia's Lovers" (1863), blending social commentary with rich character development. Gaskell was also a close friend and the first biographer of Charlotte Brontë, publishing "The Life of Charlotte Brontë" in 1857. Elizabeth Gaskell's writing combined empathy, realism, and moral insight, making her one of the most important voices of Victorian literature. She died suddenly of a heart attack in 1865 at age fifty-five, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and social awareness in English fiction.
